Dan Frommer just wrote a great post about the differences between Apple and Amazon. Ironically enough that train of thought reminded me of how their tech history rides the same tracks. It wasn’t really official until last week with the announcement of the Amazon Kindle Fire HD.
Not to get into specifics, but when the late/great Steve Jobs returned to Apple he brought something very special with him. Much to the demise of Apple enthusiasts, Jobs brought with him a hybrid of linux/unix tweaked by a local college. This “new” operating system allowed them to break away from the special hardware they were using and now utilize the same hardware Windows was using. This gave them a more secure, faster and lighter platform to install on cheaper hardware.
Amazon in similar fashion has used android 2.3(which is also from Linux/Unix) to the fullest on their touch devices. Their latest HD Tablet still uses Android but for some reason the type is not mentioned. Plus they have it so heavily themed and customized that technically at this point android is just the “engine ” pushing the kindle train. Sounds familiar? We wont know for sure what version is in their until someone buys one and immediately reconstructs it. Until then welcome another successful product that has forgotten its humble beginnings…
