The kytephone folks are really working hard to find that balance of nice visuals and safe android use for children. Via email they revealed more details about the changed look and feel of the app:
Hey Kytephone Family! The next evolution of Kytephone has arrived! Thank you for your comments. Your feedback was so important to us that we redesigned Kytephone to give you the experience and functionality that you wanted. New Interface! We completely re-designed the interface to appeal to older children. The approved apps are shown in the home screen, while the contacts, photo gallery, and camera are accessed from the bottom row of icons. At the top, a green notification bubble will appear if to let the kids know about missed calls or new text messages
